The experience
The day starts with a pickup at Wadi Rum Village or Visitor Center, then a one-hour drive south through the valley of Wadi Rum and across Wadi Saabit to reach the mountain. The hike itself takes around four hours to the top and back, with your guide setting up lunch in a secluded area partway through so you can eat and rest before the descent. The panoramic views from 1,832 meters stretch across the vast desert mountain ranges of southern Wadi Rum and into north-western Saudi Arabia.
On the return journey, the route passes through the white desert with its flat formations and wider valleys, then stops at Qatar spring and other viewpoints before heading to the camp at sunset. This is when the Wadi Rum pinnacles and canyons turn vivid gold and red. Your guide serves hot Bedouin tea by the fire while you watch the light fade, then leads you to the camp for a homemade Bedouin dinner cooked under sand. The night is spent at the camp surrounded by thousands of stars. In the morning, breakfast is served before your transfer back to Wadi Rum Village.
The tour runs as a full overnight excursion, so you leave with water, lunch, coffee or tea, dinner, breakfast, and a guide included. Wadi Rum entrance fees are separate (7 JD per person, or free with a Jordan Pass). The activity is suitable for all fitness levels, though it is not recommended for pregnant travelers or those with poor cardiovascular health.
