The experience
The tour starts at a central meeting point in Wadi Rum village at your chosen time, morning or afternoon. You climb into a 4WD jeep with up to six other travelers and head into the UNESCO Protected Area for a 3-hour off-road run across the red desert. The guide navigates the terrain while you pass Lawrence Spring, Khazali Canyon, the Red Sand Dunes, Lawrence House, and Small Arch. At each stop you can walk or hike on foot, and you can ask the driver to pull over anywhere else that catches your eye. The landscape is the kind used in Hollywood films: sandstone towers rising from rust-colored sand, the scale and emptiness of it hitting different when you're actually there.
After the drive, the jeep heads to the overnight camp in the middle of the Wadi Rum area. Dinner is a traditional Bedouin buffet cooked under the sand. Once the meal is done, you sit by a bonfire with the other travelers and the guide, stargazing and listening to stories. This is the part most people remember. You sleep in a private Bedouin tent, and in the morning there's coffee and a Bedouin breakfast before the drive back to the village. If you book the day tour only, you skip the overnight and return after the 3-hour jeep safari instead.
The guide speaks English and Arabic. Vegetarian and vegan meals are available if you request them at booking. Bottled water, tea and coffee are included. The Wadi Rum entrance fee (7 JD per person) is not included but can be waived with a Jordan Pass.
