The Experience

What's actually involved in a day crossing Wadi Rum by jeep? You ride in the back of an open vehicle across sand and rock, stopping at eight or nine named sites—Lawrence Spring, Sand Dune, Khazali Canyon, Little Bridge, Lawrence House, Mushroom Rock, Burdah Rock Bridge and Um Frouth Rock Bridge—each one a different rock formation or historical landmark. The route is built around the light: you start in the morning when the desert is coolest and finish at sunset, which is when the rock faces change color and the landscape becomes the reason people come here.

The hiking piece is one 40-minute walk into Aby Khashaba canyon, a slot between high walls where the rock narrows and the scale shifts. The rest of the day is spent in the jeep, which means you cover ground without arranging your own transport or navigating the unmarked routes yourself. Lunch is included and happens somewhere in the middle of the day. Your guide speaks English and knows the desert—where the inscriptions are, which formations are worth stopping for, how long the light will hold.

If you want to stay longer, overnight in a Bedouin camp or sleep under the stars with a fire-cooked dinner is possible; that costs extra and you arrange it by phone or WhatsApp before the tour starts. Children from age 4 are welcome. The jeep ride itself is bumpy—the desert floor is uneven—so it is not suitable for anyone with spinal injuries or serious heart conditions, but otherwise the pace is set by the vehicle and the stops, not by how fit you are.

What’s included

  • Jeep transport across the desert floor.
  • English-speaking guide for the full day.
  • lunch.
  • access to all eight named landmarks and the 40-minute canyon walk.
  • sunset viewing from the desert.

Operated by Wadi Rum Magic Tours

Is this one for you?The jeep ride is bumpy and the canyon walk is 40 minutes on foot, so this tour suits travelers who are comfortable with uneven terrain and do not have spinal or serious heart conditions. The full day runs 6 to 8 hours, which means an early start and a late finish timed to sunset, so it works best if your schedule can hold that block of time without rushing.

Top questions

What exactly is Aby Khashaba canyon and how long do we spend walking there?

Aby Khashaba canyon is a narrow slot canyon in Wadi Rum where the rock walls close in on both sides. The walk into it takes 40 minutes and is the only hiking portion of the day; the rest of the time you are in the jeep.

Can we really watch the sunset from inside the desert, or do we drive back to town for it?

The tour finishes at sunset in the desert itself, so you watch it from the landscape where you have spent the day—the rock formations change color as the light goes, which is why the route is timed to end there.

What if we want to sleep in the desert instead of going back to Aqaba the same night?

Overnight stays in a Bedouin camp or under the stars with a fire-cooked dinner are available as an add-on for an extra charge. Arrange this by phone or WhatsApp when you book the main tour.
