The Experience

“You see that line in the rock? My grandfather used to bring his camels here for water,” said Salem, our guide, as he pointed up at Lawrence Spring. I was still catching my breath from the short scramble—turns out desert rocks are rougher than they look, and my shoes filled up with fine sand almost instantly. The air smelled faintly of mint from someone’s tea nearby, and a group of camels wandered past like they owned the place (which honestly, maybe they do).

The jeep rattled over hard-packed sand and we all laughed when it lurched—someone lost their hat out the back but Salem just grinned and reversed to fetch it. At Khazali Canyon he led us between cool stone walls covered in old carvings—tiny feet, animals, writing I couldn’t read but felt weirdly connected to anyway. The sun was already high but inside the canyon there was this hush broken only by birds and our footsteps crunching over pebbles. It made me think about how many people must have walked here before us. Then we climbed the Red Sand Dune (harder than it looks!)—my legs burned but the view from the top really did something to me. Not sure if it was pride or just relief.

I didn’t expect to like Little Bridge so much. It’s not huge but standing on top with wind tugging at my scarf, I felt oddly tall for once. Down below, Salem poured sweet tea into little glasses and told us stories about growing up in Wadi Rum—he laughed when I tried to pronounce “shukran” properly (I probably butchered it). By then my hands were sticky from dates someone handed around and I’d stopped checking my phone for signal entirely.

If you go for the morning tour you get this peaceful walk through Abu Khashaba Canyon—green plants everywhere against all that red sand—and birds darting overhead. For sunset though… well, sitting on a mattress while Salem brewed tea over a fire as the whole sky went gold-orange is something I still think about when city life gets too loud. We ended back at Wadi Rum Village dusty, tired, and a bit sunburned—but kind of wishing we could do it again tomorrow.
