The Experience

I didn’t expect the air in Wadi Rum to smell so clean—almost sharp, like stone after rain. We started from the village (it’s just a cluster of low buildings and dusty kids waving at jeeps), and our guide Salem grinned as he loaded us up. He said something to his cousin about the weather—apparently it was “good for climbing,” which I took as a warning. The first stop was Lawrence Spring. Camels everywhere, chewing lazily while we scrambled over rocks slick with moss. I tried to picture Lawrence himself here but mostly just felt my knees complaining.

Khazali Canyon was next, and honestly, I could’ve stayed there an hour. It’s narrow and cool inside, with ancient carvings you can run your fingers over—some are just shapes but others look like little feet or animals. Salem told us stories about traders passing through on their way to Damascus or Mecca; I kept thinking how weird it is that people have been walking this same path for centuries. The red sand dune looked easy until you actually try to climb it—soft as flour and twice as slippery. Kids from the village ran past us laughing, then tumbled down headfirst while we just tried not to eat sand.

The Little Bridge was my favorite surprise—smaller than photos make it seem but somehow more satisfying when you’re standing on top. Coming down, we sat cross-legged in a tent with sweet tea so strong it made my teeth ache (Salem laughed when I asked for less sugar—apparently that’s not a thing here). For lunch he cooked vegetables and bread right on the fire; smoke got in my eyes but the food tasted earthy and real. Somewhere between bites of warm flatbread and watching shadows move across the rocks, I realized how quiet everything felt out there.

Later we walked Abu Khashaba Canyon—green trees against all that red sand—and saw bottles hanging from branches for birds to drink from after rain. By sunset Salem drove us to this spot where the whole desert turned gold and pink at once. He poured more tea while we sat on thin mattresses in the sand. It wasn’t dramatic or anything—just peaceful in a way I still think about sometimes when city noise gets too much.
