A 4x4 jeep climbs red dunes while your guide points out where camels still drink from desert springs.

A half-day jeep tour of Wadi Rum in a 4x4 with a Bedouin guide who belongs to the al Zalahbieh tribe and has lived in the desert for generations. You visit the red sand dune, a small arch, Um Frouth Rock Bridge, a canyon with historical inscriptions, and a natural water source, with time to climb, scramble and photograph at each stop. The afternoon departure includes sunset at Um Sabatah around a campfire. Water and Bedouin tea are included; sandboarding happens at the canyon end if time remains. Camel rides of 30, 60 or 120 minutes can be added for extra cost, and overnight stays in a traditional Bedouin camp with dinner and breakfast are available as an option.

Step-by-step itinerary

Wadi Rum half-day jeep tour

  • Arrive at Wadi Rum parking lot
  • Visit natural water collection site
  • Climb red sand dune and drink Bedouin tea
  • Explore canyon with historical inscriptions
  • Scramble to top of small arch
  • Climb Um Frouth Rock Bridge for photos
  • Walk canyon and optionally sandboard
  • Watch sunset at Um Sabatah with tea
  • Return to Wadi Rum parking lot

The Experience

The tour departs at 9am or 2pm from the parking lot next to Wadi Rum village, and you arrive 20 minutes early. A Bedouin guide picks you up in a 4x4 jeep and takes you to the red sand dune first — you climb to the top for a 360-degree view of the desert, then rest with Bedouin tea. From there the route moves through a canyon where you see inscriptions from different historical periods, then stops at the small arch where you scramble to the summit for photos.

The guide then drives to Um Frouth Rock Bridge, another climb with views across the desert. At the canyon entrance, you walk the full length on foot — a 30 to 45-minute walk with narrow sections and desert views — and if time allows, you sandboard down the red sand at the far end. If you chose the afternoon departure, the jeep takes you to Um Sabatah to watch the sunset while sitting around a campfire with Bedouin tea. Either way, the driver brings you back to the parking lot at Wadi Rum Rest House.

Your guide is from the al Zalahbieh tribe and speaks English and Arabic. Throughout the tour there is time to ask questions about Bedouin life, desert traditions and how people have lived here for centuries. The tour suits all fitness levels, though climbing dunes and scrambling on rocks is part of the experience. If you want a camel ride before or after the jeep tour, you can add one — 30 minutes for 15 JD, 60 minutes for 20 JD, or 120 minutes for 35 JD. Overnight stays in the family-run Bedouin camp include a tent with shared bathroom, dinner and breakfast buffet, and access to the communal tent with WiFi, a telescope and views of the desert.

What’s included
