The Experience

The first thing I noticed about Wadi Rum was how quiet it gets—like the air just presses pause. Our guide, Khaled, grinned as we climbed into his battered 4x4 (I swear it’s seen more sand than metal at this point). He handed us bottled water and said something about “Jordanian air conditioning”—meaning all the windows down, hair whipping everywhere. The red sand looked almost fake against the sky. First stop: Lawrence Springs. There were camels munching quietly under these scraggly little trees, and Khaled pointed out moss that glowed green in the shade. I tried to climb up for a better view but slipped on a rock—Khaled just laughed and offered me sweet tea from his thermos. I could taste cardamom in it.

We bounced through dunes that felt endless—at Red Sand Dune, I tried running down but ended up with half the desert in my shoes (worth it). Khazali Canyon was cooler, literally; stepping inside felt like someone turned down the sun. The walls are covered in old carvings—animals, people, even what looked like ancient graffiti. Khaled traced one with his finger and told us stories about pilgrims passing through here ages ago. At Little Arch, a French couple tried to get a selfie but their phone nearly slid off the rock—everyone laughed and someone offered to help. It’s weirdly easy to talk to strangers out here.

Lunch happened in a patch of shade near Lawrence’s house—a pile of stones that somehow still stands after all this time. Khaled made fire for tea again (he’s obsessed) and unwrapped bread stuffed with something spicy and smoky—I never did catch what it was called. After eating we just sat there for a while not really talking, watching shadows crawl across the sand. Later we stopped at Mushroom Rock and Burdah Bridge for photos (the shapes look unreal), then walked through Abu Khashaba Canyon where birds echoed between stone walls and you could smell wild herbs crushed underfoot.

If you stay overnight—and honestly, you should—the camp is simple but feels safe, tucked into the rocks. Dinner comes out steaming from a pit in the sand; everyone gathers around low tables or sprawls on mats while stars start popping out above us like someone flicked on a switch. There’s laughter in three languages around the fire and that same sweet tea making its rounds again. I lay back later just listening to wind move over the tents and thought: this is what quiet really means.
