The experience

You meet your guide in Wadi Rum village and spend the day in a jeep moving between sites across the desert floor. The stops build from north to south: Lawrence Spring sits at the base of Jebel Rum, where a short walk leads to ancient Nabatean hieroglyphs and a water trough where camels drink. The Red Sand Dunes rise high enough to give 360-degree views of three surrounding mountains. Khazali Canyon narrows between rock walls striped with pink, brown and grey, its surfaces carved with petroglyphs and Kufic script left by Thamudic, Arab and Nabatean peoples over centuries. Little Rock Bridge and Lawrence House (thought to be a strategic lookout during the Arab Revolt) sit far into the desert, not near the village.

Midday your guide cooks lunch over a fire: galayet bandora (a tomato-based dish) with hummus, bread, tomatoes and cucumbers. After eating, you drive to Mushroom Rock and Burdah Rock Bridge, which towers 300 meters above the valley but is viewed from a distance on this tour. The walk through Abu Khashaba Canyon takes about 35 minutes through shaded terrain with a short rocky section. Your guide drives around the mountain to meet you at the far end. A sand dune nearby is set up for sandboarding, with a board provided. Um Frouth Rock Bridge sits in the white desert and is climbable for most visitors. Chicken Rock and nearby soft sand dunes with beetle and lizard tracks round out the afternoon.

You arrive at camp just before sunset in the Um Sabatah area, famous for its light. Sit in the dining tent with Bedouin tea, relax in the red sands, or climb the small mountain behind camp: each spot frames the sunset. After dinner, you gather around a fire on comfortable mats in a Bedouin tent (winter) or under the open sky (summer) for tea, conversation and stargazing. The camp holds up to 22 guests and sits in near-total silence. Breakfast is served before your return drive to the village by 8:30am.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Arabic.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 15 years); Infant (under 3): free.

What's the hike through Abu Khashaba Canyon actually like?

Abu Khashaba Canyon is an easy walk of about 35 minutes with a short rocky section in the middle. The canyon stays cool and shaded, and your guide meets you at the far end after driving around the mountain. The pace is relaxed, so you can take your time and enjoy the trees.

Can you really climb the rock bridges, or just look at them?

Um Frouth Rock Bridge in the white desert is climbable, and most visitors reach the top and walk across it. Little Rock Bridge is also an easy walk to reach and great for photos standing on the center. Burdah Rock Bridge, which towers 300 meters, is viewed from the valley floor on this tour rather than climbed.

What does the camp actually feel like at night?

The camp sits 11 kilometers south of Wadi Rum village in an area known for near-total silence. In summer you sit under the open sky around a fire. In winter a Bedouin tent shelters the gathering. Visitors remark on the quiet and the clarity of the stars for counting shooting stars.

Is the food cooked fresh, or brought from the village?

Your guide cooks lunch over a fire in the desert: galayet bandora with hummus, tomatoes, cucumbers and bread. Dinner and breakfast are also prepared at camp, so all three meals are included in the overnight stay.

How much time do you actually spend driving versus walking?

The day mixes jeep travel between sites with short walks and one longer hike. Most stops allow time to explore and photograph. The Abu Khashaba Canyon hike is the main walk at about 35 minutes. Your guides move at the pace you want and are flexible with timing at each site.
