The experience
The tour runs from morning through the next day, starting with a climb to Lawrence's Spring where a natural water source sits at the top. From there, the jeep takes you to Jebel Khazali, a peak in the center of the Wadi Rum Protected Area where a 100-meter fissure in the rock holds Thamudic, Nabatean and Islamic inscriptions alongside petroglyphs of humans, animals and feet believed to carry religious meaning. These carvings were first documented by a French epigraphist in 1932. You'll also ascend the Red Sand Dune to see the desert spread out below, visit the Little Rock Bridge (an accessible overlook suitable for families and those wary of heights), and stop at Lawrence's House, a remote ruin with a Nabataean inscription nearby.
Midday brings lunch in the heart of the desert: gallaya, hummus, tuna, salad, Jordanian bread and juice. The afternoon takes you to Mushroom Rock, shaped by centuries of wind and rain into its distinctive form, then to the Burdah Rock Bridge (the largest natural arch in Wadi Rum, standing roughly 80 meters high), and Abu Khashaba Canyon, where wild fig trees and desert shrubs grow among red and yellow rock formations on a one-hour walk. The Umm Fruth Rock Bridge, 15 meters tall and Wadi Rum's most photographed landmark, comes next. Your guide can photograph you from the ground while you climb the footholds to the top.
As the sun sets, you drive to the White Desert, 40 kilometers south near the Saudi border, where the white sand catches the last light differently than Wadi Rum's red dunes. After sunset you return to the Bedouin camp for a traditional dinner and tea around a bonfire under the stars. Breakfast and the return to the meeting point happen the next morning.
