The experience

The tour moves through Wadi Rum's most recognizable landmarks in a single day. You'll drive to a natural spring where Bedouins and camels drink, then climb up the mountainside to fig trees for a view over the water and surrounding desert: a climb that uses hands and feet on the rocks. From there, the jeep takes you to a sand dune with a 360-degree view of the red desert. You can hike to the rocky outcrop at the top or, if you bring a board (or rent one for 5 JOD), slide back down. The route passes through the filming locations of Lawrence of Arabia and The Martian on the way.

The day includes stops at a narrow canyon with old inscriptions carved into both walls, a naturally formed rock bridge you can climb onto, and Lawrence of Arabia's house, where a moderate climb near the top rewards you with another desert view. Around midday, the guide brings you to a cave or shaded spot for lunch and a long rest. You stay there until 4pm, which means you skip the hottest part of the afternoon. Bedouin tea comes with the tour. Lunch is optional and costs 10 JD per person if you want it prepared on the spot.

The afternoon continues through Star Wars filming locations toward Mushroom Rock, where traditional Bedouin music and tea are sometimes available. You'll see the Burdah Rock Bridge, the largest natural bridge in Wadi Rum, and if time allows, hike through Burdah Canyon. A longer canyon hike of about 30 minutes (with a moderate climb in the middle) takes you through one of the desert's most striking stretches. The jeep waits at the far end. The tour finishes at Um Frouth Bridge, a middle-sized natural bridge with a moderate climb, then moves to a prime sunset location in the White Desert. Entry to Wadi Rum is 5 JD per person (waived if you hold a Jordan Pass), paid at the Visitor Center before the tour begins.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English and Arabic.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (7 to 10 years); Infant (under 7): free.

What's the natural spring at the start of the tour like?

The spring is a water source used by both Bedouins and animals, and it's a popular spot where camels gather. You can follow a pipe up the mountain to reach fig trees above it, though the climb requires hands and feet on the rocks and is easier going up than coming down.

How much time do you spend resting during the day?

You stay in a cave or shaded spot from midday until 4pm, which is the hottest part of the afternoon. This long break lets you eat, drink and relax while the sun is at its peak.

Can I add meals to this tour?

Bedouin tea is included with the tour. Traditional lunch and dinner are both optional: lunch costs 10 JD per person and is prepared in the desert. Dinner costs 10 JD per person and is traditionally cooked underground. If you book an overnight stay in the Bedouin camp, both meals are included in that package.

Which film locations does the tour pass?

The route goes through sites where Lawrence of Arabia, The Martian, Star Wars IX, and Aladdin were filmed. You drive past these locations on the way to other stops rather than stopping at each one.

What's involved in the canyon hike?

The main canyon hike takes about 30 minutes and includes a short moderate climb in the middle. The jeep drops you at the beginning and waits at the end, so you walk through without backtracking.
