The Experience

The road south from Amman to Petra is long but not dull — our driver, Khaled, pointed out every odd hill and tiny village along the way. I half-dozed until we stopped for cardamom coffee at a roadside shack (the owner insisted I try it black). Petra’s first real moment hits you in the Siq — that hush when the pink stone walls close in and you can only hear your own footsteps. The Treasury appears all at once, not slowly. It’s bigger than I thought, almost intimidating. A few Bedouin guides offered camel rides; I just shook my head and grinned. My legs were already jelly from climbing up to the Monastery — worth it for that wind at the top and the view over empty hills. I still think about that silence.

By late afternoon we were winding into Wadi Rum. The sand here isn’t just red; it changes color with every shadow. Dinner was cooked by our camp host over an open fire — smoky chicken and flatbread you tear with your hands. There was a moment after dinner when everyone went quiet, looking up at more stars than I’ve ever seen in my life. Someone tried telling a story but trailed off because honestly, what do you say? The tent was simple but warm (bring socks), and I woke up to cold air and distant camel bells. Not exactly my usual morning routine.

The last stop was the Dead Sea, which is so bright it almost hurts your eyes. Floating is weird — like being held up by something invisible — and I got salt in my mouth (don’t recommend). We had just enough time to let the mud dry on our arms before heading back to Amman. It felt like three different worlds crammed into two days, with Khaled always waiting patiently even when we lost track of time at lunch or wandered off for photos.

What’s included

Your two days include hotel pickup and drop-off from Amman with an English-speaking driver escorting you between sites in a modern vehicle with AC and bottled water provided. Depending on your selected option, you’ll also get one night in a Bedouin camp deep inside Wadi Rum plus dinner and breakfast before heading out again toward the Dead Sea for free swim time before returning home.
