The experience

Yes, the route chains three of Jordan's most visited sites with enough time at each one to actually experience them. The first day starts with a 3-hour drive from Amman to Petra, where a 4-hour guided visit takes you through the narrow Siq gorge to the Treasury carved into rose-red rock, then past the Street of Facades, Royal Tombs, and a Roman-style theatre. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and the guide walks you through the Nabataean history as you move through it.

After Petra, a 2-hour Jeep tour with a local Bedouin driver takes you into Wadi Rum's red sand desert. You pass Lawrence's Spring, Khazali Canyon, and towering rock formations as the light changes across the dunes. The overnight happens in a deluxe tent with a private bathroom and air conditioning, not roughing it, but close enough to feel the desert. Dinner is traditional Bedouin food, and you sleep under the stars if the weather holds.

Day two begins with breakfast in the camp, then a 3-hour drive to the Dead Sea, Earth's lowest point on land at over 430 meters below sea level. The Siq is a narrow gorge carved into the rock that leads to Petra's most famous monument, the Treasury. It's the main entrance to the ancient city, and the 4-hour guided visit includes walking through it to reach the Treasury and explore the surrounding tombs, temples and theatre carved into the rose-red rock face.

Do I sleep in a tent at Wadi Rum, and what are the facilities like?

Yes, if you choose an option that includes accommodation. The overnight is in a deluxe tent with a private bathroom and air conditioning, so it's comfortable rather than primitive. Dinner is a traditional Bedouin meal served in the camp.
