The experience

The route begins in Amman and moves south through Madaba, where you visit the Byzantine Mosaic Map and the Church of Saint George before descending into Wadi Mujib, a massive canyon carved by the Dead Sea valley. The landscape shifts as you approach Petra, the ancient Nabataean city built over 2,000 years ago to control Arabian trade routes. You walk the narrow Siq (the main entrance carved into the rock), and emerge at the Khazneh, a monumental facade believed to be a Nabataean tomb. The itinerary includes the Monastery and the Altar of Sacrifice before the afternoon drive to Wadi Rum.

Night falls in Wadi Rum, where you stay in a traditional Bedouin camp and eat dinner prepared in Bedouin style. The next morning brings a 2-hour 4x4 Jeep tour through the desert's towering cliffs of red, brown and gold sandstone: the same landscape where Lawrence of Arabia and The Martian were filmed. After breakfast, you head north to Aqaba for a one-hour city tour before the final leg to the Dead Sea, which sits 1,300 feet below sea level. The mineral concentration there makes floating effortless. You have free time to swim before returning to Amman.

The vehicle is private and air-conditioned. Only your group travels in it. A moderate amount of walking is involved at Petra and Wadi Rum, so wear proper shoes. The operator recommends purchasing a Jordan Pass before arrival, as Petra entrance fees are not included in this tour. Winter nights in the desert are cold, so bring warm clothes and personal items for the camp stay.
