The Experience

You might think three days is too short to see Petra, Wadi Rum, and the Dead Sea all at once. But the route works because everything flows south from Amman — Jerash and Ajloun Castle first, then the long drive to Petra, then into the desert, then back north to the mineral-heavy water. The pickup happens at 8am on day one, and by noon you're walking through the Roman columns at Jerash, which still stand exactly as they did two thousand years ago. Ajloun Castle comes after lunch, a hilltop fortress with views that stretch across three countries on a clear day. You're back in Amman by evening, sleeping in a three-star hotel with breakfast included the next morning.

Day two is the long one — three hours driving south toward Petra, the carved city that sits 225 kilometers from Amman. The Khazneh, that famous rose-colored facade, hits you first as you walk through the narrow siq, a slot canyon that was the only way in and out for traders two thousand years ago. You'll see the Monastery, the Altar of Sacrifice, and the water channels the Nabateans engineered to survive in stone. After that, the drive continues into Wadi Rum, the valley where Lawrence of Arabia and The Martian were filmed. The Bedouin camp sits eight kilometers inside the protected area, away from the tourist clusters, with separate tents for each booking, beds, blankets, electricity from solar panels, and a dining room. Dinner is cooked Bedouin-style, and the quiet out there is the kind that makes you stop checking your phone.

Morning three starts with breakfast at the camp, then a two-hour jeep tour through Wadi Rum in a local Bedouin car — the kind of vehicle that handles the red sand and the rock formations. After that, you transfer to the Dead Sea, which sits 400 meters below sea level and is exactly as strange as it sounds. The salt concentration is so high you float without trying. There's free time to swim before the drive back to Amman, where the tour ends.
