The Experience

Our driver Hassan picked us up at the Amman hotel at dawn, and within an hour we were standing at Mount Nebo looking out toward the Dead Sea and the West Bank — the view Moses supposedly saw before he died. The 4th-century church there is half-ruin, half-restoration, with Byzantine mosaics still bright enough to catch the light. Then a short drive to Madaba, where the main event is a 6th-century map of Palestine inlaid in the floor of St. George's Church — it's enormous, intricate, and the kind of thing that makes you realize how old the idea of mapping actually is. We had time to walk the town's narrow streets and grab coffee before heading south on the King's Way, the ancient caravan route that cuts through Wadi Al-Mujib, a valley so wide and geometrically strange it doesn't look real. By afternoon we were at Kerak Castle, a Crusader fortress from 1132 that sits on a ridge overlooking everything, then the final push to Petra, arriving at the hotel as the light turned gold.

Petra takes two full days if you want to do it right. The first morning we walked into the Siq — a canyon so narrow the walls seem to lean in — and came out at the Treasury, the carved facade that's on every postcard and somehow still stops you. From there the path opens up: the Street of Facades, the Royal Tombs, Pharaoh's Castle. If you have the legs for it, the Monastery is another 800 stairs up, and the view from the top is the kind of thing you remember years later. The second day we explored the outer tombs and smaller monuments. It's a lot of walking on uneven stone, so the shoes matter. The town itself — Petra village — is small and quiet, and the hotel sits right at the entrance, which saves time.

Day three was the Wadi Rum jeep ride. We left Petra at 8am and drove 1.5 hours to the desert, where a Bedouin driver met us with a 4x4 — old, no air conditioning, but that's part of it. Two and a half hours bouncing through red sand, past rock formations that look like they were carved by someone with a sense of humor: mushroom shapes, towers, arches. We stopped at Bedouin inscriptions from the Thamudic period, climbed a dune, watched the light change the color of the rocks. It's genuinely one of the most striking landscapes you'll see. After that, a long drive — 3.5 to 4 hours — to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth at about 1,300 feet below sea level. The hotel sits right on the shore.

The Dead Sea itself is strange. You float without trying, the water is thick with salt, and it stings if you have any cuts. Bring swimwear and water sandals — the shore is rocky. The final morning we drove 20 minutes to the Baptism Site on the Jordan River, where John baptized Jesus. It's a pilgrimage place, and you can see the remains of Byzantine churches, baptism pools carved into the rock, and caves where monks lived. Then back to Amman for the last stop: the Citadel with the Temple of Hercules, the Umayyad Palace, the Roman Theatre from the 2nd century. The driver dropped us at the airport or hotel depending on the flight time. The whole thing moves at a steady pace — you're in the car a lot, but you're also seeing something different every few hours, and the private vehicle means no waiting for other groups.
