The experience

Petra, the Rose-Red City carved into sandstone cliffs, was the capital of the Nabataean kingdom and remained hidden to the outside world until 1812. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders, it demands more than a quick stop, and this tour gives you the time to actually walk it. Your private guide meets you at the site and leads you down the Siq, a long winding canyon that opens onto the Treasury. From there you move through the Street of Facades, past the Roman Theater and up to the Royal Tombs, each one revealing a different layer of the ancient city.

After Petra, you drive an hour and a half to Wadi Rum, the desert landscape locals call the Moon Valley. The shift from carved stone to open sand happens fast, and you arrive in time to watch the sunset paint the dunes. The full day is long (three hours driving to Petra, another three hours back toward Wadi Rum, plus the walking at each site), but it compresses two of Jordan's most distinct landscapes into a single departure from Amman.

Your driver picks you up early morning in an air-conditioned vehicle and handles all the transport. The guide is live and speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of three other languages, so the commentary is in your own words. Specialized infant seats are available, and all areas at both sites are wheelchair accessible.
