The Experience
Your driver picks you up from your Amman hotel at 7 AM on day one and heads south through Jordan's largest nature reserve, the Dana Biosphere Reserve, where you'll stop for 15 minutes at the viewpoint to see the landscape shift from desert sand to mountain peaks. By 10 AM you're at Shobak Castle, a Crusader fortress built in 1115 sitting on a dramatic hilltop — you walk through its chambers and walls to understand how it commanded the trade routes below. Lunch comes at Little Petra (Siq al-Barid), the smaller, less crowded sister to Petra itself, where you wander through Nabataean rock-cut tombs and carved facades before your driver takes you to your hotel in Petra City, a short walk from the visitor center.
Day two starts at 7 AM heading into Petra itself. You explore on foot: the Djinn blocks (three enormous monuments the Nabataeans built in the 1st century AD), the Treasury (Al Khazna) — a 40-meter facade carved into rose-colored stone with Corinthian capitals and friezes — and the Siq, the narrow canyon that opens into the city. Your driver then takes you to Wadi Rum, arriving at 5 PM as the sun hits the towering sandstone mountains. You can add a 2-hour 4x4 jeep tour with your driver to see Lawrence Spring, the little bridge and Khazali canyon, or ride a camel, or do sunset yoga with a panoramic view, or simply watch the stars. Dinner is a traditional Bedouin zarb (meat cooked in an underground oven) served at your camp, where you sleep in a Bedouin-style tent.
On day three you leave Wadi Rum at 8 AM, cross through Aqaba, and reach the Dead Sea by 1 PM. You float for two hours — the salt content keeps you buoyant — and stop to see the salt formations and view the Jerusalem mountains across the water. By 3:30 PM you're heading back north, arriving in Amman by 5:30 PM for drop-off at your hotel. The car has Wi-Fi, soft drinks and mineral water throughout, and a power bank for your phone.

How much walking and physical activity is involved?
Petra requires walking on foot through the Siq canyon and around the ancient city — the amount depends on which sites you explore, but plan for several hours of moderate walking. The Dana Biosphere Reserve stop is 15 minutes at a viewpoint. Shobak Castle involves climbing through chambers and walls. Wadi Rum activities (jeep tour, camel riding, yoga) are optional and you choose your level of involvement.
