You start early from your Amman hotel and drive toward Petra, spending the day walking through the ancient city's carved facades and passageways. The rock-cut architecture dates back centuries, and the scale of the site means you'll cover ground on foot. Bring comfortable shoes and water. As afternoon light hits the stone, you head to Wadi Rum, arriving in time to watch the sun drop behind the towering sandstone formations. Dinner and an overnight stay happen at a deluxe Bedouin camp, where you sleep in the desert and wake to the landscape's quiet.

On day two, you make your way back toward Amman but stop at the Dead Sea first. The resort there has pools and access to the mineral-rich water. You float effortlessly because of the salt content, then apply therapeutic mud from the lakebed. This part of the journey is built around the physical experience (the buoyancy and the mud treatment), so plan to spend a couple of hours in the water and on the shore. What is Petra like when you walk through it?

Petra is an ancient Nabatean city carved directly into rose-colored sandstone cliffs. The main structures (temples, tombs and a monastery) are carved facades and chambers cut into the rock face itself, and you walk through narrow gorges and open plazas to reach them. The site is large, so comfortable walking shoes matter, and the day you spend there lets you see the major monuments without rushing.

How much time do you actually spend at the Dead Sea?

The Dead Sea stop happens on the return journey to Amman on day two, and you spend a couple of hours there. That time covers floating in the water, applying the therapeutic mud, and rinsing off: enough to experience the buoyancy and the mineral treatment without an extended stay.

What is the Wadi Rum overnight like?
