The Experience
The day runs eight to eleven hours, starting at Wadi Rum Rest House. A private 4x4 takes you through the protected area's red sand valleys and past dramatic rock formations, stopping at each site long enough to climb down and walk around on your own. Lawrence Spring sits in the main valley; from there the route moves to Red Sand Dune and Khazali Canyon, where you can see ancient inscriptions carved into the rock. The guide then drives out to the quieter sites—Lawrence House and its viewpoint, Mushroom Rock, Um Fruth Rock Bridge—and finishes with Abu Khashaba Canyon, an optional twenty to thirty minute walk through the canyon itself.
At midday, the guide prepares lunch for you in the shade of the mountain, with bottled water and Bedouin tea and biscuits served at sunset. The vehicle does the moving; you do the exploring. There's no fixed schedule at the stops—you set the pace, take photographs, and move on when you're ready. The tour ends with sunset viewing before the drive back to the village.
You can upgrade to include a one-hour camel ride at the start of the day. The guide speaks English and drives; children from age one are welcome. Note that getting in and out of the 4x4 repeatedly is part of the day, and the terrain and vehicle movement mean this tour is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or poor cardiovascular health—a moderate level of fitness is needed.
