The Experience

The tour runs eight to nine hours and covers the main sights of Wadi Rum in a single arc. You travel by 4x4 with a local guide who knows where the light hits each landmark and where the ground is solid enough to walk. At Lawrence Spring, Red Sand Dune, Khazali Canyon, Small Arch, Lawrence House, Mushroom Rock, Abu Khashaba Canyon and Um Fruth Rock Bridge, you have time for a short hike to explore the area and take photographs—the guide does not rush you through a checklist.

At midday the group stops in the shade and the guide cooks lunch in the desert itself. You eat where the tour pauses, not in a restaurant or a prepared camp. After lunch you continue to the remaining sites, and near the end of the afternoon the guide takes you to the spot he knows gives the best view of the sunset. You watch from there with a cup of local Bedouin tea while the light changes across the sand.

The tour includes private transportation from Wadi Rum town, bottled water throughout the day, and the guide's knowledge of the landscape and the sites. The entrance fee to Wadi Rum Protected Area (7 JD) is paid at the Visitor Centre, not included in the tour price. If you want to extend the day into the night, you can add a night in a desert tent or wild camping at checkout.
