The experience

A 30-minute hike through tropical jungle gets you to the first zipline, where the five runs begin: each one strung over waterfalls, jungle canopy or both. Between the lines, you cross two rope bridges rigged to lower you down the canyon wall. The setup means you are not just passing through. You are moving through the landscape on equipment, reading the terrain as you go.

Once you reach the base of the waterfall system, the day shifts. You hike down through seven cascades, jumping into natural pools, sliding down rock faces and swimming through canyons. The water is cold and the canyon walls are close. A guide leads the group through the sequence and shows where it is safe to jump or slide. This is not a viewing platform. You are in the water, moving through it.

Back at basecamp, you change out of wet gear and sit down to a Dominican lunch with vegetables, soft drinks, coffee tasting, chocolate from the plantation and rum shots. Transport back to the cruise port is included. The whole day runs three to four hours from pickup to drop-off. Life jackets, helmets and all entrance fees are covered. Water shoes and lockers are available if you want them.
