The Experience

The moment you step out of the visitor center, the canyon opens up. Tropical air hits you, and ahead is the first waterfall—not a photo, not a promise, but water falling in front of you. The Damajagua 7 waterfalls sit hidden in the northern hills of the Dominican Republic, a string of cascades you reach by climbing, then descend by jumping, swimming, and sliding down natural rock slides. It sounds wild because it is. You're fitted with a life jacket and helmet at the center, then a local guide leads your group up through the canyon, stopping at each level. The hike isn't casual—the terrain is uneven, the rocks are slick, and you're moving upward—but the payoff is immediate: at each waterfall, you get to choose. Jump from the ledge into the pool below, or slide down the smooth stone face worn by water over years.

The descent is where the tour earns its name. You don't walk back down; you use the waterfalls themselves. Slide into one pool, swim across, climb out, and repeat. Your guide stays with the group the whole way, watching the timing and the water flow. (Note: only 7 of the 27 waterfalls are open right now because rainfall has been low, but that's still a full day of climbing and sliding.) Before you head up, you leave your bag—phone, valuables, dry clothes—at a secure spot near the center. Bring waterproof cameras only if you want photos; otherwise, just bring yourself and old running shoes that can get wet. The Dominican Republic protects this area as a natural monument, and it shows in how the guides move through it—careful, knowledgeable, not rushed.

After the canyon, you eat. The visitor center has an open-air restaurant with mountain views, and lunch is a Dominican buffet: white rice, red beans, fried chicken, grilled pork, and a fresh salad. Water and Coke come with it, plus a shot of mamajuana on the bus ride back. There's also a stop to taste organic chocolate from a local producer, and coffee from a local brewer. The whole tour runs as a shared excursion—you're not alone in the canyon, but groups stay manageable—and pickup and drop-off happen at Amber Cove or Taino Bay cruise terminals, so you don't have to arrange your own transport back to the ship.

What’s included

Your day includes round-trip transport from Amber Cove or Taino Bay cruise port, entry to Damajagua, life jacket and helmet, a local guide for the hike and descent, Dominican buffet lunch with chicken, pork, rice, beans and salad, water and Coke, a mamajuana shot, coffee from a local brewer, and organic chocolate tasting at the visitor center.
