Step-by-step itinerary
Waterfalls hiking and swimming excursion
- Pass Maimon and see fruit houses
- Hike to waterfalls
- Swim, jump, and slide in waterfalls
The Experience
We were already sweating by the time we passed Maimon—windows down, the air thick with that sweet smell from fruit stands. Our guide, Carlos, pointed at a pile of guanábanas stacked on a rickety table and told us his mother makes juice from them every Sunday. I tried to say “guanábana” like he did but just got a laugh from the driver. The drive itself was bumpy but kind of fun, especially when we hit those potholes near the village—everyone bounced in their seats and someone in the back yelled “rollercoaster!”
The start of the 7 Waterfalls excursion felt almost too easy. You hear water somewhere up ahead before you see it—just this low roar mixed with birds and people’s voices echoing off rock. The rocks were slick under my hands (I slipped once; nobody saw, thankfully), and the spray made everything smell like wet leaves. Carlos handed out helmets and life jackets before we got close to the first jump. He said something about “safety first” but then grinned and showed us how to slide down one of the falls feet-first. I hesitated for maybe three seconds before going for it—cold water everywhere, up my nose, in my ears, but honestly? It felt good after that sticky heat.
There’s this moment after you climb out of one pool and look back—the light comes through the trees all greenish-gold, everyone’s laughing or catching their breath. Some folks jumped more than once just because they could. I didn’t expect to feel so awake or hungry (bring snacks if you can). At one point I tried to ask Carlos about how locals use these falls—he said families come on weekends for picnics and kids learn to swim here. That stuck with me.
The hike isn’t easy if you’re not used to moving around a lot—I’ll admit my legs were wobbly by the end—but there’s water waiting at the van and cold Coke if you want it. We piled back in damp swimsuits, hair plastered everywhere, still grinning like kids who’d gotten away with something wild. Sometimes I still think about that first jump—how quick it goes once you let yourself go.
What’s included
Your day includes shared transportation from Taino Bay or Amber Cove with air conditioning (which feels great after all that climbing), plus safety gear like helmets and life jackets for each waterfall jump or slide. After finishing up at the falls, there’s bottled water and Coke waiting before heading back—no lunch included though, so eat beforehand or pack something small.
