The Experience

El Cedral is where this tour's off-road adventure really begins. Before you get there, the jeep takes you through the tequila ranch to learn how Mexico's most famous spirit is made — you'll taste different expressions and see the local animals — then out to the east side of the island where Chen Rio's virgin beach has a rock formation that creates a natural pool. The drive winds through dense jungle and into El Cedral itself, Cozumel's first town, where you'll see the palapa at the center, the statue of Los Mestizos in traditional dress, and a Catholic church built next to an ancient Mayan temple.

The bumpy off-road section takes you deep into the Mayan jungle to Jade Caverns and Cenote Jade, the island's largest known cenote. Unlike the massive cenotes in Yucatan, this one has winding stairs so you can climb down into it. Your guide teaches you about the cenote's history and points out the local species — bats often hang upside down waiting for nightfall. After exploring the caves, you swim in the cenote itself before heading to the final stop.

At the beach club, your guide sets you up at a table with access to the bar, bathrooms, changing rooms, showers and lounge chairs. Lunch is your choice of chicken, beef or fish fajitas. After eating, the guide gears you up with snorkeling equipment and walks you through how to use it, then leads you into the water. The Caribbean visibility is outstanding — you'll see colorful tropical fish above the coral reef system. Floating toys and a trampoline are available in the water, or you can sit back on a waterfront lounge chair and watch the waves.
