The first thing I remember is the sound of tires crunching over sun-baked gravel as we rolled out in our little convoy of Jeeps. Our guide, Luis, waved us forward with this easy grin — he’d already told us to expect sand everywhere and not to worry about it. The air smelled like salt and sunscreen. We pulled up at the beach club and honestly, I just wanted to sit there forever with my toes in the sand. But Luis handed me a snorkel mask (I always forget how awkward those things feel at first) and pointed out where the reef drops off. The water was so clear you could see fish darting around even before you got in.

After drying off — or sort of drying off, because nothing really dries here — we headed east along the coast. San Martin beach was windy, wild, not crowded at all. There was a ceviche waiting for us that tasted like lime and sea air. A couple from Mérida chatted with us about their favorite spots on the island; I tried to keep up but my Spanish is… well, let’s just say I mostly smiled and nodded. Then came the tequila tasting: ten different kinds lined up like a rainbow. Luis explained how each one’s made (I only half-followed after glass six), but I do remember him laughing when I tried to pronounce “reposado.”

The cenote at Cedral was quieter than I expected — almost hushed except for birds somewhere overhead. Cool water, sharp green light filtering through leaves above. Luis told us how cenotes were sacred to the Maya; standing there waist-deep in fresh water with sunlight flickering on my arms, it felt kind of true. At Otoch park we watched a honey ceremony (the bees are tiny and don’t sting), then learned how chocolate’s made from scratch — grinding cacao by hand is way harder than it looks on YouTube.

Lunch was cochinita pibil wrapped in banana leaves, smoky-sweet and somehow earthy at the same time. There was a moment during the purification ritual when everyone went quiet — just incense smoke curling up into bright sky — that still sits with me now. We drove back dusty and happy, windows down, sunburnt shoulders pressed against faded seats. If you’re looking for something polished or fancy… this isn’t it. But if you want real stories to take home? Yeah.
