The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the crunch of tires over loose gravel, louder than I expected. We’d barely left the meeting point in Cozumel when our guide, Luis, grinned back at us—his sunglasses somehow always catching the sun just right. The Mezcalitos area felt raw and wide open, salt in the air and those stubborn coastal winds tugging at my shirt. My hands were already dusty from the ATV handlebars. It’s funny how quickly you stop caring about looking cool when you’re bouncing over rocks and laughing like an idiot every time you hit a bump.

We stopped near a patch of tangled trees where Luis pointed out this almost hidden path—he called it “the shortcut to the cenote.” I could smell wet earth before I saw anything.
