The experience

You arrive at the meeting point and take the wheel of your own jeep. From there, the day splits into three distinct pieces: first, the drive itself through winding jungle roads and dense forest to El Cedral, where you'll walk around the island's first church and learn about the Mayan temple that stands there. The guide handles the history. You handle the driving. A tequila tasting happens here too, before you head back to the vehicle.

The second stop is Jade Cenote, a sinkhole surrounded by cave formations where you jump in and swim. This is where the off-road driving pays off: the cenote sits deep in the jungle, accessible only by the route your guide navigates. The water is cool and the cave walls frame the opening above. Bring bug spray for the jungle sections. The guide will tell you when to apply it.

The final leg is snorkeling at Dzul Ha Reef inside Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park. Your snorkel gear is provided, and the reef is where the day shifts from land to water. The reef sits in shallow water, visible from the surface, and the guide stays with the group. Five hours total, including drive time and stops, means you're back by early afternoon: useful if you're on a cruise ship or have the rest of the day free.
