The Experience

I’ll be honest — I stalled the trike before we even left the parking lot. Our guide, Luis, just grinned and gave me a thumbs up like it happened every day (maybe it does?). Once we got going though, that weird mix of sea air and sunblock hit my face and suddenly I was laughing. Cozumel looks different when you’re this close to the road — more colors, more noise, more everything.

We followed Luis out along the coast, past a guy selling mangoes from his truck (I almost stopped but didn’t want to lose the group). The main keyword here is freedom — driving your own trike feels like you’re part of the place, not just watching it go by. At Otoch, which means “my home” in Maya (Luis made us say it out loud; I’m still not sure I got it right), we met people from the village who showed us how they make honey and chocolate. There was a moment during the honey tasting where time kind of slowed down — sweet but earthy, and everyone went quiet for a second. It’s funny what sticks with you.

The tequila tasting was next. I tried to look like I knew what I was doing but honestly just coughed a little and Li (from our group) laughed at me. There were dancers in bright clothes moving around us while we sipped, their feet kicking up dust. We had plenty of stops for photos too — Luis took some on his phone and said he’d upload them later so nobody had to worry about missing anything. By then my arms were sticky from sunscreen and chocolate but I didn’t really care.

Hotel pickup was easy — no stress about getting lost or finding parking. If you’re looking for a day trip in Cozumel that’s equal parts fun ride, local flavor (literally), and random surprises… well, this is probably it. I still think about that honey sometimes.

What’s included

Your day includes bottled water throughout the trip plus easy hotel or port pickup and drop-off so you don’t have to worry about logistics. Entry to Otoch Mayan Park is covered along with guided tastings of tequila, chocolate, and honey before heading back relaxed (and maybe a little sticky) in the afternoon.
