The Experience

The boat holds a maximum of 12 to 14 people, which means you are not packed in with forty others and the guide can actually see you underwater. You arrive at Marina Caleta at your own time, get fitted with a snorkeling vest and tube, and head out to Palancar Reef for the first entry. The reef is where the fish are — schools of them, moving in formation, and the coral structure itself is what you are swimming over and around, not watching from a distance. After the first snorkel, the boat moves to Arrecife Colombia, a second major reef system where the water and the life are different enough that the second dive feels like a new place.

The sea turtle sanctuary is not a tank; it is an area of the reef where turtles actually live and feed, and the guide positions the group so you can watch them move through the water without chasing them. From there the boat takes you to Playa El Cielo, a shallow sandy beach inside the sea where starfish live on the bottom and the water is so clear you can see them from the surface. This is where the 4-hour timer usually ends, though the exact sequence and timing shift with weather and what the guide judges safe on the day.

Ceviche, guacamole, fresh fruit, soda and bottled water come on board; two beers per person and tequila are included for travelers 18 and over. Snorkeling vests, tubes and viewfinders are provided, so you do not need to bring your own or rent them separately.
