Four reef stops where starfish, rays and turtles share the water with you

Snorkel four sites around Cozumel (Palancar, the turtle sanctuary, the starfish sanctuary and El Cielo) with a certified bilingual guide, snorkeling equipment, life jacket, snacks and bottled water. The boat visits a deeper reef first, then moves to shallower sanctuaries where the marine life concentrates, ending at El Cielo as a rest point before the return to the dock.

The experience

The tour runs four hours and hits four separate reefs, each one chosen for what lives there. Palancar comes first: the deeper site where the reef structure is most dramatic. From there the boat moves to the turtle sanctuary, where the seabed is shallow enough that the animals graze in plain sight. Next is the starfish sanctuary, a shallow zone where starfish carpet the bottom in numbers most snorkelers have never seen. El Cielo, the final stop, is the shallowest of all and serves as a rest point before the return to the dock.

A certified bilingual guide leads the whole thing and stays in the water with you. The boat supplies snorkeling equipment, a life jacket, snacks and bottled water. The guide handles safety and points out what you're looking at: the corals, the fish species, where the rays hide. You do the swimming and the looking. The guide does the navigation and the knowledge.

The tour accepts children from age 4, and the operator notes it suits all fitness levels. Infants sit on an adult's lap during the boat ride. Bring a long-sleeved shirt if you burn easily. Sunscreen is not permitted in the marine reserve.

Is this one for you?You do the snorkeling yourself with a guide in the water beside you, so this suits anyone who wants to move through the reefs on their own pace rather than watch from a boat. The four-hour span and four separate sites mean you're not rushed between stops, and the progression from deep reef to shallow sanctuaries lets you see different marine life at each depth.
