Cozumel's reef system sits in shallow water close to shore, which is why the boat moves between three or four snorkel sites in a single morning or afternoon rather than staying in one place. The itinerary shifts with weather and ocean conditions, but the list includes El Cielo (a sandbar where starfish gather in the shallows), Colombia Reef, Palancar Reef, El Cielito and a Turtle Sanctuary. Each stop gives you time in the water with a guide, then back aboard before moving to the next one.
The boats are equipped with safety gear and powerful engines, and the crew handles the route while you focus on what's below the surface. Snorkeling equipment is provided, so you arrive with nothing but a swimsuit and sunscreen, though the operator asks that you skip sunscreen right before the tour and use a rash vest and hat instead, since many sunscreens damage coral and make the boat deck slippery. Freshly prepared Mexican snacks and ceviche come out between stops, along with soda, beer, margaritas and rum punch (two drinks per adult, 18+).
Arrive at least 30 minutes before your departure time. The tour runs on Cozumel's local timezone, which may differ from your cruise ship's clock, so check before booking. Children from age 5 are welcome, and the activity suits all fitness levels, though it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, recent surgery, or breathing or cardiovascular conditions.

Is this one for you?The 4-hour pace means you're moving between reefs rather than anchored at one, so you see more of Cozumel's system in a single trip but spend less time at each stop than a longer excursion would give you.
