The experience
The activity starts from the shore and stays within an area roughly the size of two basketball courts, so there's no boat ride or long swim to reach the snorkeling zone. You'll walk into the water and receive a flashlight. If you want a life jacket, one is available. A live guide in English or Spanish leads the group and explains how to move through the water even if you're not a confident swimmer, plus how to communicate underwater using hand signals. The guide carries a camera throughout and records video for you to take home.
Octopuses and squid are the main draw. Both are masters of camouflage and most active after dark, which is why you won't find this activity offered elsewhere in Mexico. The group works as a team to spot them, moving slowly and staying at a safe distance. The guide emphasizes observation only, never direct contact with any animal. Along the way you'll encounter other nocturnal species and learn about their behavior. The whole experience in the water lasts roughly an hour of continuous swimming.
Snorkeling equipment, diving lamps and the recorded videos are all included. Children from age 10 are welcome. The activity is not recommended for pregnant travelers or anyone with cardiovascular concerns, and you should have at least a moderate fitness level since you're swimming for the full hour. Public transportation options exist near the meeting point, though you'll arrange your own taxi to get there and back to your hotel.
