Ride an ATV into the jungle, swim a cenote, explore a 900-year-old Mayan temple, then snorkel the reef

Snorkel Cozumel's coral gardens with a guide, but the day starts on land: you ride your own automatic ATV (no license needed) into the jungle to Jade Caverns, a 60-million-year-old cenote fed by underground rivers, where you can jump from a 20-foot platform or swim. You'll visit El Cedral, a 900-year-old Mayan temple and one of the continent's oldest Catholic churches, then taste handmade tequila before heading to the beach. The snorkel includes full gear and a guide to navigate the reef. Lunch (chicken fajitas, pastor tacos or fish tacos) comes after. Hotel or cruise port pickup and drop-off are included. A $20 USD Mayan Land Use tax applies per person.

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore cenote, Mayan village, snorkel, lunch

  • Ride ATV to Jade Caverns
  • Learn history and swim or jump
  • Visit Mayan village and temple
  • Taste handmade organic tequila
  • Snorkel with guide at Skyreef
  • Enjoy local organic fajita lunch
  • Return to cruise or hotel

The experience

El Cedral sits deep enough in the jungle that you reach it on your own ATV: a single or double automatic that requires no driver's license, though riders must be at least 13 years old. The cenote itself is the draw: Jade Caverns is a natural formation over 60 million years old, connected to underground rivers and the ocean, and the guide walks you through its history and the role cenotes played in Mayan culture. You can swim in the water or climb to a 20-foot natural platform and jump. Helmets, goggles and a life jacket come with the ride.

After the cenote, you walk through El Cedral village to see the 900-year-old Mayan temple and the old Catholic church, one of the oldest on the continent. The guide explains the site's history while locals, many of Mayan descent, sell black coral jewelry nearby. A handmade organic tequila tasting rounds out the inland portion before transport takes you to the beach.

The snorkel happens at Skyreef, a reef site where you explore coral gardens and see a variety of fish along the shore with your guide. Full snorkel gear (fins, mask, life vest) is provided. After the water, lunch is served: you choose chicken fajitas, pastor tacos or fish tacos, made by locals with local products. A non-alcoholic welcome drink is included. Beer and bottled water are available during the ATV portion. The full day runs about five hours from pickup at your cruise port, resort or Airbnb to drop-off.

Is this one for you?You ride and snorkel yourself rather than watch from a boat, so the day suits anyone comfortable on an ATV and in the water. The guide leads both the cenote visit and the reef snorkel, so you're not navigating alone. The fixed five-hour schedule fits a cruise port stop or a half-day from a resort stay.
