The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the sound—ATVs humming under the trees, birds somewhere above, and that sticky heat you only get in Cozumel. Our guide, Luis, grinned as he handed over helmets and goggles. He’d grown up just down the road from El Cedral and joked about how he used to sneak into the cenote as a kid. I tried not to look too nervous about driving my own ATV (I’ve never been very coordinated), but honestly, once we started bouncing along those muddy trails toward Jade Cavern, I kind of forgot about everything else.

The air changed when we got close to the cenote—damp and cool, almost sweet.
