The experience
The jade cavern, also called Chempita, is the only large cenote on the island open for swimming. You ride your ATV there from El Cedral, a Mayan village 22 kilometers from the center of Cozumel, about a 30-minute drive from your hotel. The cavern's natural stalactites and dark upper chamber make it a rare site (it's home to a primitive crustacean found nowhere else), and the guide explains the Mayan relationship with cenotes while you're there. You can jump into the water or swing from a rope. The cenote is untouched by human construction, so the swim is in a natural pool.
After the cenote, you ride back to El Cedral to see the ruins at the center of town, dating back to around 800 AD. The architecture and wall paintings are still visible. Then comes the tequila seminar: you taste eight different varieties (blanco, reposado, añejo, crema, dessert tequila and more), and learn how each type is distilled and aged. The guide walks you through the history and the process of turning agave into Mexico's national spirit.
Your last stop is Palm Beach, also called Punta Francesa, a sandy beach where you can rest in hammocks or lounge chairs and swim in the blue water. The activity runs about two and a half hours total. Hotel pickup and drop-off to the beach are included, along with the ATV, all entrance fees, water, and the tequila tasting.
What’s included
- Your ATV rental, bottled water, entrance to the jade cavern and cenote, a private guide in English or Spanish, the tequila seminar and tasting, and drop-off at Palm Beach are all included.
