The Experience

The day starts with a pickup from your hotel and a drive to the east side of the island, where you stop for photos of the rock formations at El Mirador Lookout. From there the route turns inland into the jungle, where the vehicle slows to watch for wildlife — deer, coatis, iguanas — and you walk through an exclusive area of Rancho Buenavista to reach the Mayan hut. There you learn how the Maya made chocolate paste from scratch and taste a small snack prepared the traditional way.

After the caves and ruins, you reach a picnic area where the guide makes lunch from scratch: carne asada tacos, guacamole, salsa made in a molcajete, fresh fruit and ceviche, with waters, sodas and homemade margaritas. The site has a pool for a quick dip before the next stop. The cenote comes next — a freshwater sinkhole with crystal-clear water where you swim and cool off, a moment most visitors say they want to repeat. The tour ends at the private beach club with its own snorkeling site, where you use the provided gear to explore the water before heading back to your hotel.
