The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Kuta, Legian or Seminyak hotel and a short drive to the Sanur shop for gear check and paperwork. By 8am you're boarding the speed boat for the crossing to Nusa Penida. The operator runs 12 dive sites around the islands (Manta Bay, Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay, Toya Pakeh and Sental among them), so the guide picks based on weather and conditions that morning.

You complete three dives with surface intervals for lunch and snacks in between. The water stays clear and the reefs are healthy and colorful. Manta rays can show up any month, though like all marine life their appearance is never guaranteed and shifts with the site and the day's conditions. The guide is a certified professional familiar with the reefs and their habitats, and stays with your group throughout.

The boat returns to Sanur by 3pm, and the air-conditioned vehicle drops you back at your hotel by 4 to 5pm depending on distance. The whole day runs about eight hours from pickup to return. Bali Diving Academy has operated since 1991 with a 100% safety record and keeps groups small.
