The Speedboat Ride to Nusa Penida Takes 30 Minutes — Then the Real Day Starts

You board a speedboat from Sanur Harbor for a 30–45 minute crossing to Nusa Penida, then visit Kelingking Beach, Angel's Billabong, and Broken Beach on foot with your guide. After lunch at a local restaurant, you spend three hours on a private snorkeling boat exploring Manta Bay, Gamat Bay, and Wall Point, where you'll see manta rays and coral reefs up close. You receive GoPro footage of your underwater time and return to Sanur by late afternoon, with the full day taking roughly 10–11 hours from pickup to drop-off.

The Experience

The boat was supposed to leave Sanur Harbor at 7:30am, but we didn't push off until nearly 8. Our guide, who met us at the dock, just shrugged and said the tide was running late — one of those things that happens when you're working with the ocean. Once we were out on the water though, the delay didn't matter. The 30 to 45 minute crossing to Nusa Penida is the kind of ride where you stop checking your phone. The spray hits your face, the engine hums, and the island gets bigger and bigger until you can see the cliffs. Kelingking Beach was our first stop, and yeah, it does look like a T-Rex if you squint — the rock formation juts out from the water in this shape that's almost too perfect to be real. We stood at the viewpoint for a while, just looking at the turquoise water and the white sand far below. Some people in our group walked down the steep trail to the beach itself, but the path is narrow and loose, so we stayed up top and took photos instead.

After Kelingking, we drove to Angel's Billabong, which is basically a natural pool carved into the rocks by the tide. The water was so clear we could see straight to the bottom, and at low tide you can wade in without worrying about currents. Then came Broken Beach — a rock arch over turquoise water, exactly like the pictures, except you can't swim there because the water flows through the arch in a way that makes it unsafe. Our guide explained the geology of it, how the arch formed over thousands of years, and we spent maybe 20 minutes just standing there. By then we were hungry, so we headed to Sebuluh Resto for lunch. The set menu was simple — grilled fish, rice, vegetables — and it came with water and coffee. Nothing fancy, but it tasted right after being out in the sun all morning.

The private snorkeling session is what separates this tour from the big group boats. We had our own small boat and our own guide, which meant we could spend as long as we wanted at each spot instead of being herded back to the main group. Manta Bay was first — the name alone makes you hope you'll see one, and we did, gliding underneath us like a shadow. Gamat Bay came next, and that's where the coral really showed up. Schools of yellow fish, some bigger fish we couldn't name, and the water was so clear it felt like we were floating in air. Wall Point was the last stop, and it had this underwater cliff that dropped away into darker blue. Our guide pointed out the different corals and kept an eye on everyone's air and comfort. The whole snorkeling part took about three hours, with time to rest between spots. They gave us GoPro footage at the end, which was a nice touch — we got shots of the manta ray and the reef that we couldn't have filmed ourselves.

The ride back to Sanur took the same 30 to 45 minutes, and by then we were tired in the good way. The boat left Nusa Penida in the late afternoon, and we were back at the harbor by early evening. The whole day runs long — you're looking at a full commitment from early morning to early evening — but the private snorkeling and the mix of land and water stops make it feel like you've actually been somewhere, not just ticked boxes. If you're thinking about doing this from Kuta, factor in the drive to Sanur Harbor at the start and the drive back to your hotel at the end. The tour itself handles the boat, the guide, your snorkeling gear, and lunch, so you're not scrambling to arrange those pieces yourself.

Top questions

How long is the boat ride from Sanur to Nusa Penida?
The speedboat crossing takes 30 to 45 minutes each way, depending on sea conditions and tide.
What's included in the tour?
The tour includes round-trip speedboat tickets, an air-conditioned vehicle on the island, an in-person guide, entry to all four beach stops, a set lunch at Sebuluh Resto, private snorkeling equipment, a private snorkeling boat, GoPro documentation, bottled water, and parking fees.
Can you swim at Broken Beach?
No. Broken Beach is a viewpoint only — the water flows through the natural arch in a way that makes swimming unsafe. You can take photos and enjoy the view from the shore.
Is the snorkeling suitable for beginners?
Yes. Gamat Bay, one of the main snorkeling spots, has gentle currents and is suitable for both beginners and experienced snorkelers. Your guide will stay with you throughout and can adjust the pace to your comfort level.
What time does the tour start and end?
The tour departs early morning from Sanur Harbor (typically around 7:30–8am) and returns by late afternoon or early evening, making it a full-day commitment of roughly 10–11 hours.
Will we definitely see manta rays?
Manta rays are common at Manta Bay, but sightings are not guaranteed — they depend on seasonal conditions and ocean activity. You will explore vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life regardless.
Is there a weight or fitness requirement for snorkeling?
You should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health, and pregnant travelers should not participate.
Do we need to bring our own snorkeling gear?
No. Snorkeling equipment is provided as part of the tour, including mask, fins, and snorkel.
What if the weather is bad or the sea is rough?
The tour operates in most conditions, but rough seas can affect the speedboat crossing and snorkeling visibility. Your guide and boat operator will make safety decisions on the day.
Can infants or very young children join?
Infants are permitted but must sit on an adult's lap during the speedboat ride. Young children can participate in the land-based stops, though the full-day duration and snorkeling may not suit very small children.
