The Experience

Wayan met us outside the hotel just before sunrise, grinning like he’d already had his coffee (I hadn’t). He asked if we’d ever been to Nusa Penida before—when I said no, he nodded like he knew something I didn’t. The drive to Sanur port was quiet except for the sound of scooters zipping past and the smell of incense from roadside shrines. Honestly, I was half asleep until we hit the speedboat—then it was all salty spray and chatter from other travelers, everyone squinting into the morning sun.

First stop on the island: Angel’s Billabong. Wayan pointed out where the tide pool drops off into open ocean—he told us sometimes you can spot manta rays gliding by, but today it was just that glassy water and a couple of kids skipping stones nearby. I dipped my toes in (cold!), and tried not to slip on the rocks. Next was Broken Beach, where you can hear waves echo through that natural archway—it’s louder than you’d think, almost like thunder under your feet.

Kelingking Beach is famous for looking like a T-Rex head from above (which is true, but also kind of hilarious once you see it). There were people lining up for photos but Wayan found us a quieter spot. He laughed when I tried to say “Kelingking” properly—I’m sure I butchered it—and then told me it means “pinky finger.” The cliffs here are wild, sharp edges with that crazy blue water below. I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home.

Lunch was simple—nasi goreng and sweet iced tea at a little warung with plastic chairs—but honestly after all those stairs and sun, it tasted perfect. Last stop was Crystal Bay; we just sat in the sand watching local kids play soccer while some folks snorkeled further out. The sand has this weird black shimmer if you look close enough. We left with salt on our skin and shoes full of sand (still finding some days later), but yeah—worth every minute.
