The Experience

“Which beach do you want to see first?” our driver Wayan asked as we slid into the cool car, still sticky from the morning heat in Kuta. I’d barely finished my coffee and already felt relieved not to be squinting at Google Maps. The air outside smelled like clove cigarettes and frangipani — inside, just that faint new-car scent. Wayan grinned in the rearview mirror and told us he’d lived near Sanur his whole life, but still loved driving out to Ubud for the art market (“Always something new,” he said). I tried to say “terima kasih” properly — he laughed and said it was close enough.

It’s strange how much lighter a day feels when you don’t have to worry about traffic or parking (which is honestly chaos in Canggu). We hopped between places we’d only seen on Instagram: Sanur Beach for a quiet walk, then Jimbaran for grilled fish that left my fingers smelling smoky all afternoon. At Ubud Art Market, Wayan waited patiently while I got lost among batik scarves and wood carvings. He pointed out which stalls were run by his cousins — I think half of Bali might be related somehow. The drive itself was half the fun; windows down sometimes, warm wind mixing with incense from roadside shrines.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much just chatting with our driver about daily life here. He told us how rainy season changes everything — even the way people drive (“More careful, but still fast!”). When we finally reached Canggu, sunburned and sandy, Wayan just shrugged and said we could take as long as we wanted. No rush. I still think about that easy feeling — like Bali time is its own thing entirely.
