The Experience

The first thing I remember is the cool mist hitting my face as we reached Munduk Waterfall. It’s louder than you’d think—almost like the sound fills your chest. Our guide, Wayan, grinned as he handed me a wet napkin (I was already soaked) and pointed out the tiny red flowers growing along the path. There was this earthy smell everywhere, part moss, part coffee from the nearby plantations. I dipped my feet in—colder than expected but somehow perfect after the drive up from Ubud.

Banyumala Twin Waterfalls was next, and honestly, I wasn’t prepared for how clear the water would be. You could see every stone at the bottom of that wide pool—Wayan joked it was “Bali’s real spa.” We swam for a bit (the current stronger near the falls), then just floated, listening to nothing but water and a few birds overhead. Lunch came after—a simple nasi campur at a little warung where everyone seemed to know Wayan by name. The sambal was fiery enough to make me cough and laugh at myself.

Leke Leke Waterfall felt different—quieter, maybe because there were hardly any people around. The trail down was muddy in spots (I nearly slipped once; Wayan caught my arm and said, “Welcome to jungle gym!”). The waterfall itself is tucked between cliffs so green it almost glows. Standing under it felt like being inside some old story—I don’t know how else to say it. And then Banyu Wana Amertha: four separate cascades hidden behind bamboo bridges and bright shrubs. Each one had its own sound; I kept thinking how much I wished my dad could see this place.

By late afternoon, driving back through rice terraces near Jatiluwih, I watched light shift over the fields and thought about how small you feel here—in a good way. There’s something about chasing waterfalls in Bali that makes you forget your phone for hours at a time. Even now, I still think about that cold plunge at Munduk when I need to clear my head.
