“You can try the holy water if you want,” Wayan said, nodding toward the pools at Tirta Empul Temple. I hesitated—wasn’t sure if I’d do it right—but he just smiled and handed me a sarong. The air smelled faintly of incense and wet stone. Locals were already wading in, splashing their faces under the spouts. I watched a woman close her eyes and whisper something, her hands pressed together. It felt like we were allowed to witness something private, but also somehow invited in.

After that, Ubud’s Monkey Forest was chaos in the best way. Monkeys everywhere—one tried to unzip my backpack while another stared me down like he owned the place (maybe he did).
