The Experience

I didn’t expect the first thing I’d notice in Ubud would be the scent—sort of sweet smoke from incense mixing with damp earth after a quick morning rain. Our driver, Putu, grinned when I tried to pronounce “Tirta Empul” (I definitely got it wrong) but he just laughed and said we’d see it soon enough. The whole idea was that this Bali private car tour could go anywhere we wanted, so we started with the Ubud Art Market. It’s noisy and bright—vendors calling out gently, fabrics everywhere. I bought a scarf I probably didn’t need.

Putu seemed to know every shortcut and back road around Gianyar. We talked about his family’s village near Mount Batur while he navigated traffic that honestly would have made me cry if I’d been driving myself. At Tegenungan Waterfall, the air changed—cooler and heavy with mist. We watched a couple of kids leap into the pool below while an older woman sold tiny packets of fried bananas by the path. I’m not sure why but those bananas tasted better than any dessert back home.

Later we reached Tegalalang Rice Terrace right as the light shifted gold over the paddies. There was a group of farmers laughing together on the far side; one waved at us with his hat. We didn’t rush—no tight schedule here—and just stood there for a while listening to frogs and distant motorbikes somewhere down the hill. The flexibility was what made this day trip around Bali feel so real—if we wanted to stop for coffee or skip a temple, no problem.

I still think about that moment at Tanah Lot Temple near sunset—the sky all layered pinks and blues, people lighting little offerings along the shore. It felt both familiar and totally new at once. Having a local guide like Putu made everything less stressful (and more fun), especially since he handled all the parking and knew where to find good snacks. If you’re nervous about getting around or just want to see Bali your own way, this is honestly worth it.
