The Experience

“You want to try?” our driver Wayan grinned, handing me a tiny packet of salty peanuts as we rattled past the edge of Canggu. I’d barely finished chewing when the view opened up — Tanah Lot Temple just floating out there on its rock, waves crashing so loud you almost feel it in your chest. It smelled like incense and ocean salt. There were a few families making offerings, and Wayan explained the story behind the temple — I didn’t catch every word but something about sea snakes protecting it. I liked that detail.

The drive north got greener by the minute. At Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, we walked along muddy paths between those bright green steps — honestly, my shoes still haven’t recovered. The air was thick and sweet from wet grass. Some local kids waved at us from a field; one tried to sell me a coconut but I just smiled (regret that now). Our guide snapped a photo of us with Mount Batukaru in the background — he really knew all the best angles for this day trip Bali tour.

I wasn’t prepared for how cool it felt up by Ulun Danu Beratan Temple — mist rolling off the lake, everything quiet except for a group of women arranging flowers at the water’s edge. The temple looked like it was floating. We stopped at Handara Gate too (yes, we did the classic photo), then Wanagiri Hills for that double-lake view where clouds kept shifting over Tamblingan and Buyan. Honestly, I could’ve stayed there longer but lunch was calling.

Last stop: waterfall swim near Wanagiri — cold enough to make you yelp but worth it after all that heat earlier. On the way back Wayan played some old Balinese pop songs and told us about his favorite warung in Ubud (I wrote it down somewhere). Still thinking about that first glimpse of Tanah Lot though… you know?
