The Experience

Your guide picks you up in a private, air-conditioned car and drives north into Bali's highlands, where Ulun Danu Beratan Temple sits on Lake Beratan. The temple is used for water ceremonies honoring Dewi Danu, the goddess of lakes and rivers, and the lake itself feeds the rice fields and plantations below. You can take a paddle boat or canoe ride on the water, or walk the grounds and take in the mountain views. The guide explains the temple's role in Bali's irrigation system and Hindu practice.

From there, the route heads to Taman Ayun Royal Temple, built in 1634 by the King of Mengwi and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The temple is surrounded by gardens and ponds, and you'll walk through the historical grounds. Your guide leads you through the spiritual layout of the compound, showing how the temple was designed for royal ceremonies. Lunch is served at this point in the day (included in the Inclusive Tour option; you arrange your own if you booked transport only).

The afternoon takes you to Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, where you walk among the stepped paddies and see how Balinese farmers grow and process rice. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site as well, and the scale of the terraces gives a sense of the labor and engineering that goes into rice cultivation on the island. Your guide explains the traditional methods and the importance of the irrigation system fed by Lake Beratan upstream.

The final stop is Tanah Lot Temple, perched on a large rock off the coast. A curved cliff formation connects the temple to the mainland, and beneath it sits a small cave where sea snakes live—considered guardians of the temple in Hindu belief. You walk down to the beach and have time to explore the temple grounds and the shoreline. If the timing works, you'll catch the sunset from the beach before the drive back to Ubud.
