The experience

Your driver picks you up at your hotel and heads to Taman Ayun Temple first, the royal temple built in 1634 by the King of Mengwi. It sits on land surrounded by a large fish pond and appears to float on water, with the multi-storied roof and Balinese architecture that marks the temples throughout the day. From there you move to Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, which actually floats on Lake Beratan itself. It's the main water temple in Bali, built to honor the goddess Dewi Danu and the lake's role as the central irrigation source for the region.

The drive then takes you to Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, the widest rice terraces in Bali and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The terraces are protected because of the Subak irrigation system, a local practice that has sustained the culture and landscape for centuries. You'll stop here to walk through the green expanse before heading to lunch (a buffet meal included in the tour), and then on to your final stop. Tanah Lot Temple, an 11th-century structure on the ocean, is the last destination and the reason the day ends in the late afternoon: the temple sits on a rock that's only accessible at low tide, and the timing is arranged so you're there for the sunset over the water.
