The Experience

The boat operator at Sanur Harbor knows the routine by heart — he checked us in, pointed to the fast boat, and said something in Indonesian that our driver translated as "water's calm today, you'll see the rays." That kind of local knowledge is what saves a day trip from feeling rushed. You start at 7am with hotel pickup from Ubud, drive to Mertasari Harbor at Sanur Beach, and board a public fast boat for the 30-minute crossing to Nusa Penida Island. A private car and driver wait on the other side, ready to take you through four stops before the sun gets too high.

Kelingking Beach hits first — the one shaped like a T-Rex's head when you look at it from above, which is why every phone in Bali has a photo of it. The walk down the cliff spine is steep and takes focus, but the water below is so clear you can see the bottom, and the rock formations are the kind of thing you stare at longer than you planned. After that comes Broken Beach, where an arched tunnel lets ocean water pour through a narrow cove, then Angel's Billabong just around the corner — a shallow pool of crystal water where you can wade in and sometimes spot manta rays in the deeper water beyond. The snorkeling happens at Crystal Bay, your last stop, where the coral reefs and sandy bottom make it worth bringing a mask. The whole island loop takes around 12 hours from pickup to drop-off.

Lunch is at The Voyage restaurant on the island, traditional Indonesian menu, included in the price. The driver handles the navigation between stops, so you're not watching a map or timing yourself — you're just moving from one view to the next. If you've been in Ubud for a few days and want to see something that doesn't look like rice terraces, this is the day that does it. The boat ride back to Sanur leaves in the late afternoon, and you're back in your hotel by evening.
