The experience

You start at Sanur Beach harbor on Bali's east coast, where the fast boat departs for Nusa Penida. The crossing takes about 45 minutes. Once you arrive at Nusa Penida harbor, a guide meets you and takes you by private vehicle (if you book the all-inclusive option) or meets you at the harbor (if you choose the meet-in-Penida option) to begin the island stops. The guide speaks English and handles all logistics: entry fees, parking, and navigation between sites.

The five main stops are Kelingking Beach, the most famous spot on the island, where the coastline curves like a dinosaur's head and you can hike down to the sand or view it from the cliff top; Broken Beach, a circular bay formed by a collapsed cliff with a natural arch connecting it to the ocean; Angel Billabong, a natural infinity pool of turquoise water where you can swim; and Crystal Bay, a white-sand beach good for snorkeling if you book a snorkel option. Between stops, you'll see the island's cliffs, rock formations, and if you're lucky, manta rays in the water. Lunch is a set Indonesian meal at a local restaurant on the island.

The return boat leaves Nusa Penida harbor in the late afternoon, getting you back to Sanur by early evening. If you booked hotel pickup, the driver meets you at Sanur and takes you back to your accommodation in a designated Bali area. The whole day, including travel time and lunch, runs about 10 hours. Snorkeling is only included if you select a snorkel option at checkout. The standard tour is sightseeing and swimming at the beaches.

Can I book this trip if I'm staying in Ubud or Kuta instead of near Sanur?

Yes. The all-inclusive option includes hotel pickup from designated Bali areas and drop-off after the return boat arrives. Small group tours depart from meeting points in Ubud (Central Parking Pura Dalem Puri Peliatan), Kuta (AZKO Central Park Kuta), Nusa Dua (Central Park Nusa Dua), or Sanur (Sanur Harbor). The meet-in-Penida option starts directly at Nusa Penida harbor, so you arrange your own transport to Sanur and the boat.

What is Kelingking Beach actually like when you get there?

Kelingking Beach is shaped like a dinosaur head, with a long narrow strip of sand stretching into the sea. You can view it from the cliff top, which offers a spectacular panoramic view of the cliffs and ocean, or hike down to the beach itself to walk on the sand and feel the waves. The hike down is steep but doable for most fitness levels.

Is snorkeling included in the tour, or do I need to pay extra?

Snorkeling is included only if you select a snorkel option at checkout. The standard tour visits Crystal Bay and other beaches where you can swim, but snorkeling gear and instruction are only part of the snorkel add-on. You choose your option before you book.

What happens if I want to meet the guide in Nusa Penida instead of getting picked up from my hotel?

The meet-in-Penida option starts at Nusa Penida harbor (Banjar Nyuh). Fast boat tickets and Bali hotel transfers are not included with this option, so you arrange your own way to Sanur Beach harbor and purchase your own boat ticket, or book the boat separately. You meet the guide at the harbor when you arrive on the island.

How much time do you actually spend on the island versus traveling by boat?

The boat crossing from Sanur to Nusa Penida takes about 45 minutes each way. The total tour duration is 10 hours including the boat rides, lunch, and travel between the five beach stops on the island. Most of your time is spent at the beaches and natural sites rather than in transit.

Do I need to bring my own snorkel gear, or is it provided?

Snorkel gear is provided only if you book a snorkel option. If you choose the standard tour option, you can swim at Crystal Bay and the other beaches, but snorkeling equipment is not included. Bring your own if you want to snorkel on the standard tour.
