The Experience

The fast boat leaves Sanur port at 7:30am, and by mid-morning you're in the water at Manta Bay on Nusa Penida's southwestern coast. This is where the real thing happens — the manta rays here can reach seven meters across, and they're harmless, which somehow makes it easier to just float there and watch them move. You get snorkeling equipment (mask, fins, life jacket, underwater camera if you want it), and the boat either stays shared or goes private depending on your booking. Crystal Bay comes next, with coral reefs still mostly untouched, then Gamat Bay on the western side where the current runs strong enough that you feel it — the guides know the timing, so it's not reckless, just real.

After snorkeling, there's a lunch break at a local restaurant (you pay separately there), and then the island part starts. Broken Beach is the one with the massive hole carved through the cliff by waves — you stand on top and look down into this tunnel of stone and water. Angel's Billabong is a natural pool trapped between the cliffs, fed by ocean swells, and the water shifts between green and blue depending on the light and the minerals underneath. Then Kelingking Beach, which people call T-Rex Beach because the cliff face looks like a dinosaur's head when you see it from the right angle. The track down is steep and doesn't really exist as a proper path, so most people just stand at the top and take the photo, which is fine — the view is the point.

The return boat leaves Banjar Nyuh port between 3:30 and 4:30pm, getting you back to Sanur by late afternoon. If you're staying in Bali and booked the hotel transfer option, pickup happens in the morning and drop-off happens after you land — just confirm your hotel name and location beforehand via WhatsApp or email, because the driver needs to know where to find you. If you're already on Nusa Penida, you'll get a cash refund for the boat ticket portion. Groups larger than five people need to book two separate tickets, and if your hotel is outside the main tourist zones (Uluwatu, Ungasan, Pecatu, Tegalalang, Tabanan, Mengwi), there's an extra charge of roughly USD 6–20 depending on distance — that gets settled on the day.

One thing to know: Nusa Penida is still building itself out. Roads, ports, infrastructure — it's all under construction, and the island moves at its own pace. That's part of why it still feels like somewhere real instead of somewhere polished. If you want to add Manta Point as an extra snorkeling stop, that costs USD 12 per person on a shared boat or USD 67–91 for a private boat, paid on the day. Bring cash, bring sunscreen, and don't expect everything to run like clockwork — expect it to run like an island that's figuring things out.
