The Experience

A driver holds a paper with your name at Banjar Nyuh port—that's how the day starts, after the fast boat crosses from Sanur at 7:30am. You've just arrived on Nusa Penida, the island off Bali's southeast coast, and the snorkeling is about to begin. Manta Bay comes first, in the southwestern corner, where the water is clear enough to see the stingrays that give the spot its name—they're massive, up to seven meters, but harmless. The current here can be strong, so your guide watches the conditions and decides the entry point. You're in the water maybe forty minutes, mask on, watching the reef below.

After Manta Bay, the tour moves to Gamat Bay on the western side, where the currents run unpredictable because of the swirling water between the north and south channels. It's not a casual snorkel—your guide briefs you on how to read the pull and stay calm. Then comes Crystal Bay, the third stop, where the coral is still intact and the fish are used to visitors. By midday you're at a local restaurant for lunch (you pay separately) and a break before the afternoon part of the tour. The private car takes you to Kelingking Beach, the one with the T-Rex cliff face—you can't climb down to the sand, the track is too steep, but you stand at the top and see the shape of it, the beach tucked under the rock like a secret.

There's a natural pool between the cliffs, filled with seawater and fed by the ocean waves, and the color shifts from green to blue to yellow depending on the light and the sand below. A few people swim in it; most just photograph it. The last stop is a tunnel carved into the hillside by the force of the waves—you see it from above, a hole between the rocks where the water has worn through. The fast boat leaves Banjar Nyuh at 3:30 or 4:30pm to return to Sanur, so you're back in Bali by late afternoon. The whole day is about six to seven hours on the island itself, moving between four snorkeling and beach spots in a private air-conditioned car with a local driver who knows the roads and the currents.
